You
need to make sure you can trade using the domain name you have registered. You
shouldn’t assume that you can use your domain name just because you were able to
get it registered. Little or no checks are made by a Registrar when a domain
name is registered, other than to ensure that it is not identical to an already
registered domain name.
Keep your registration records and contact information accurate: You give
hijackers an edge if you fail to keep your contact information accurate. You
can't expect a registrar to know when you change staff, offices, or the email
address used in domain name transfer communications. Keep business and emergency
contact information for your registrar accurate and available for your incident
response staff.Make domain name protection a part of your security
policy: Identify domain names as an asset and perform a risk assessment.
Incorporate domain name hijacking into your incident response and business
continuity planning, and develop an "urgent restoration of domain name and DNS
configuration" strategy as part of business continuity planning. Investigate
whether business interruption and losses related to a domain name or DNS
configuration incident are covered by insurance policies.
What and where to register : Domain names are easy to register and it costs little to do so. Because of this, many businesses register domain names with scant thought about why they are seeking registration. Even less thought is given about the space in which a domain name is registered. Multiple registrations are sought for variations of the ideal domain name in multiple domain name spaces.
Domain Name Security Feature — Domain Protect : The Domain Protect
feature is available to all Network Solutions customers free of charge, and is
turned on automatically for all new domain name registrations. This service
prevents your domain name from being transferred away from your Network
Solutions account unless you first securely log in to turn off Domain Protect
and allow the transfer.
What Are Unauthorized Transfers? : Domain names can be switched or
transferred from one registrar to another without the knowledge or consent of
the domain name holder. This practice is sometimes known as slamming. In some
cases, companies that are not domain name registrars have falsely represented
themselves as Network Solutions. Customers who respond to the instructions may
reveal credit card information or unintentionally transfer the domain name.
